The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee guides and executes AMIA’s strategic goals and objectives related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Additionally, when it comes to biomedical and health informatics science and practice, there is a natural intersection with health equity that enables the identification and tracking of disparities in health and healthcare as well as the design, implementation, and evaluation of informatics-enabled interventions at the micro-, meso-, and macro-levels.
The impact of health disparities spans five application domains: translational bioinformatics, clinical research, consumer, clinical and public health informatics. The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee also directs specific attention to AMIA’s mission and its intersection with structural racism and health equity.
AMIA's strategic DEI efforts are built around three pillars.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Pillars
Build a Diverse AMIA
Focus on strengthening pathways into the informatics field and AMIA in order to build a racially diverse workforce representing the American society.
Build an Inclusive AMIA
Build a culture within AMIA that encourages collaboration, flexibility, and fairness to enable individuals to contribute to their full potential and further retention within the organization.
Build a Sustainable AMIA
Develop structures and strategies to equip AMIA leaders with the ability to measure results, refine approaches; diversity and inclusion institutionalize a culture of belonging, equity, and justice.

History
In July 2020 AMIA Board of Directors announced the creation of a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Task Force to guide and execute strategic goals and objectives related to diversity, equity, and inclusion through recommendations to the AMIA Board of Directors. The Task Force directed specific attention to AMIA’s mission and its intersection with systemic racism and health equity.
Since July 2020 the DEI Task Force moved forward with its efforts to understand where AMIA was relative to DEI and design recommendations for the AMIA Board of Directors to consider. Recommendations were presented in May 2021 and unanimously approved, including the establishment of the permanent Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee effective for the 2022-2023 term.
