AMIA began it’s work toward certifications in clinical and health informatics more than 12 years ago. Certification is the credential that recognizes and verifies a superior level of education, experience and expert knowledge. This expertise is tested by exam and maintained through continuing education and recertification.
AMIA actively supports two informatics certifications and separately offers educational review courses (CIBRC and ARC) to assist professionals preparing for the exams.
The AMIA Health Informatics Certification (AHIC) is offered by the AMIA Health Informatics Certification Commission. Certified individuals carry the AMIA Certified Health Informatics Professional (ACHIP) designation. Clinicians who are nurses, pharmacists, dentists, nutritionists, public health and non-ABMS board certified physicians are eligible to apply and sit for the exam via an education plus practice pathway.
The Board Certification in the Subspecialty of Clinical Informatics (CIS Diplomate status) is offered by the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) and the American Board of Pathology (ABP). Physicians who are board certified in one of the 24 American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) disciplines are eligible to apply and sit for the exam via a practice pathway or an ACGME-accredited fellowship training in Clinical Informatics.
