Public Biography
Li Zhou, MD, PhD, FACMI, FIAHSI, FAMIA, is a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a Lead Investigator at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She earned her PhD in Biomedical Informatics from Columbia University before spending more than 10 years as a Senior Medical Informatician at the Mass General Brigham (MGB) healthcare system. She currently directs the MTERMS lab at MGB. Throughout her career, her research has focused on temporal reasoning, natural language processing (NLP), machine learning, knowledge representation and clinical decision support. She has developed technological innovations in NLP and machine learning that have enabled rapid processing and data mining of clinical documentation in support of decision making and patient safety. She is an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Medical Informatics (IJMI) as well as for the Journal of General Internal Medicine (JGIM), and she is an elected fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) and of the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics (IAHSI).
Historic ACMI Biography
Dr. Zhou is a recognized world expert in temporal reasoning and natural language processing (NLP). She has developed and evaluated NLP systems, including real-time integration with EHRs to support clinician decision-making. Her innovative NLP efforts include contributions to allergy detection, medication reconciliation, clinical documentation, and development of predictive risk models.
