Dear Colleague,

Thank you for helping AMIA to have such a productive and exciting year so far. I would like to update you on some important progress and news which position us well for an exciting close to 2024!

AMIA Connect launch

In late August, after significant preparation and testing, AMIA launched a new and enhanced online community platform for its members, AMIA Connect. Connect is the official communication channel of AMIA Working Groups and Committees. New AMIA Connect features were a result of listening sessions and requests from members while building on existing strengths of the original Connect platform. The new Connect platform is already fostering even stronger member connections, communication, and collaboration. Important new AMIA Connect features include: polls, collaboration tools, community moderation, events, email attachments, and messaging. Learn more in the AMIA Connect FAQs.

New ACMI Fellows elected

On November 10, AMIA will celebrate and induct 25 new Fellows into the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) during the 2024 AMIA Annual Symposium. New Fellows are elected annually to the College by active ACMI Fellows. They represent excellence from academia, government and industry demonstrating outstanding informatics thought leadership, service, and scholarship. Please join me in congratulating this year’s new class of Fellows.

Search for new AMIA CEO

The window for accepting applications for the critical role of AMIA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is now closed. AMIA received an amazing response from qualified candidates and excitement is building for this role. Thank you for sharing this opportunity within your network. The AMIA Chief Executive Officer Task Force (CEO-TF) is moving into the next phase of the CEO Search with candidate selection and initial interviews. Stay tuned for additional updates in the coming months. We anticipate introducing AMIA’s new CEO in late 2024.

Board and Working Group elections

Elections to choose new Board and Working Group members opened on September 23. For those who have questions for the Board Chair-Elect or Board Director candidates, I invite you to attend our 2024 Candidate Forum Webinars. These forums provide you with the opportunity to ask candidates about their future plans for AMIA, areas of interest, and other important items. You can register now for either or both forums: (Tuesday, October 1)_Board Director Candidate Forum and (Friday, October 4) Board Chair-Elect Candidate Forum.

New FQHC membership category

We are excited to announce a new membership category for Federally Qualified Health Centers and Community Health Centers (FQHCs) effective January 1, 2025. These centers provide critically needed medical services to underserved populations across the United States. This new AMIA health system membership tier will provide FQHCs, which have limited funding, a greater opportunity to take advantage of AMIA’s offerings including gaining access to essential education for teams, peer networking opportunities, and the ability to learn from other health systems.

Revision to Academic Forum membership benefits

Based on changing institutional needs and the desire to grow and retain student members, the Academic Forum (AF) has revised its membership benefits for the 2025 membership cycle. AF membership options will now include individual memberships and the ability to purchase bulk student memberships. The AF community currently consist of 92 formal training programs spanning baccalaureate, masters, doctoral, clinical informatics fellowship, and other specialty-specific training (e.g., nursing informatics).

Critical deadline for Annual Symposium registration

This is the year to make the most of the AMIA Annual Symposium, November 9-13, in San Francisco. This incredible gathering is a highlight of my year! I am encouraged by the outstanding program and strong early registration numbers. If you haven’t yet registered, now is the time to do so to take advantage of the October 17 advanced registration deadline. Register today to save and begin preparing for Symposium.

You won’t want to miss the Opening Keynote Presentation – Ethical Algorithm Design by Michael Kearns, PhD, a Professor and the National Center Chair in the Computer and Information Science Department at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Kearns also serves on the Amazon Scholars program, focusing on algorithmic fairness, privacy, machine learning, and more.

What else should you expect?

  • Informatics in the Age of Generative Artificial Intelligence programming
  • Outstanding exhibitors and programming in the exhibit hall
  • More than 600 cutting-edge presentations across 150-plus sessions
  • Opportunity to earn CME/CNE credits, as well as Professional Development Units

Thank you again for your membership and your commitment to our mission. As always, I welcome your questions and feedback. Looking forward to hopefully seeing you in person at the AMIA 2024 Annual Symposium in San Francisco this November.

Yours sincerely,
