Nursing Informatics Innovators: Betty L. Chang
Dr. Betty L. Chang’s major contributions in informatics have been in the area of Nursing Education and Research. She began in the early 1980’s by designing a computerized educational program for undergraduate students and a nursing diagnosis clinical support system for research and education of graduate students and practicing nurses. The research module was made available to rural nurses in the United States through the American Nurses’ Association’s (ANA) publications mechanism. She also was instrumental in developing the first computerized learning laboratory, and program for teaching of nursing informatics in the School of Nursing, University of California, Los Angeles.
She has served as a member of the ANA Council on Nursing Applications, and has continuously contributed to nursing informatics through her publications, and service and leadership positions in the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) programs, and Nursing and Consumer Health Informatics Working Groups.
