Nursing Informatics Innovators: Judy G. Ozbolt
Judy Ozbolt received her BSN from Duke University in 1967. Following Peace Corps assignments in Turkey and Liberia, she earned an MS and a PhD from the University of Michigan. She has worked in nursing informatics since 1972, when she began developing a prototype decision support system for nursing diagnosis. The Nursing Terminology Summit Conferences, which she organized and led from 1999 through 2008, contributed substantially to standards for nursing data in ISO, LOINC, and SNOMED. Dr. Ozbolt held faculty appointments in Lyon, France, and at the Universities of South Carolina, Pittsburgh, Michigan, Virginia, and Vanderbilt. In 2005-2006, she was a Scholar at the Institute of Medicine, leading the planning process for National Academies initiatives in health and biomedical informatics. In 2006, she joined the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Nursing as Professor and Specialty Director for Nursing Informatics.
Retired since 2010, Dr. Ozbolt continues professional activities as a consultant, including leading a project for the Office of the National Coordinator of HIT. She has held many leadership positions in AMIA and ACMI, including founding member of the Board of Directors, founding chair of the NI working group, founding member of the JAMIA editorial board, Secretary of AMIA, Scientific Program Chair of the AMIA Fall Symposium, and President of ACMI. In addition, she is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.
